GNR 'RoadPol — Speed' operation catches over 4300 speeding drivers

GNR 'ROADPOL — SPEED' OPERATION CATCHES OVER 4300 SPEEDING DRIVERSIn the recent GNR operation that took place between the 17th and 23rd of April over 4,300 drivers of more than 37,000 checked were fined for speeding.

The National Republican Guard (GNR) checked the speed of 37,775 drivers between April 17th and 23rd in the 'RoadPol — Speed' operation that resulted in 4,363 speeding offenses. The operation was aimed at the most critical roads and at controlling excessive speed, one of the main causes of accidents.

In addition to these speeding fines, more than 6000 administrative offense notices were also served, for other driving offences.

This operation, which ended on Sunday and extended to the entire country, took place within the scope of the European Traffic Police Network (RoadPol), of which the GNR has been a member since 2021.

In 2022, 119,651 speeding violations were recorded in Portugal, and  atotal of 78,896 road accidents were recorded last year, of which at least 3,816 had excessive speed as their main cause.

What are the fine amounts for speeding?

For light car or motorcycle drivers: 

From 60 to 300 euros if you exceed up to 20 km/h, inside towns, or up to 30 km/h, outside towns (mild offence);

From 120 to 600 euros if you exceed by more than 20 km/h and up to 40 km/h, inside towns, or by more than 30 km/h and up to 60 km/h, outside towns (serious offence) and in the penalty driving disqualification accessory for a period of one to 12 months, with subtraction of two points from the driving license;

From 300 to 1500 euros if you exceed more than 40 km/h and up to 60 km/h, inside towns, or more than 60 km/h and up to 80 km/h, outside towns (very serious offence) and with an accessory penalty disqualification from driving for a period of two to 24 months, with subtraction of four points;

From 500 to 2500 euros if you exceed more than 60 km/h, inside towns, or more than 80 km/h, outside towns (very serious offence) and with an accessory sanction of driving disqualification for a period of two to 24 months, subtracting four points from the driving license.

As for drivers of other vehicles, the fines are:

From 60 to 300 euros if you exceed up to 10 km/h, inside towns, or up to 20 km/h, outside towns (serious offence);

From 120 to 600 euros if you exceed more than 10 km/h and up to 20 km/h, inside towns, or by more than 20 km/h and up to 40 km/h, outside towns (serious offence) and in the penalty driving disqualification accessory for a period of one to 12 months, with subtraction of two points on the driving license;
