A man who was drowning and went into cardiorespiratory arrest at Praia da Rocha, in Portimão, was saved by a Portuguese firefighter who was on vacation in the Algarve.
The bombeiros, Filipe Almeirante, the 'hero', told his story on his Facebook page, saying "I didn't do anything much, I just did what I know."
"I didn't do anything else, I simply limited myself to doing what I know, in this situation I was the second link in the 'rescue/survival' chain, the first link was the lifeguards who quickly pulled the man out of the water", says the fireman, born in Santarém.
The 80 year old drowning man was seen floating on his stomach, 20 metres from the beach when lifeguards spotted him and dragged him from the water.
Filipe carried out resuscitation on the victim and helped transport him from the sea to the ambulance, with the man now breathing, but unconscious.
An Emergency and Resuscitation Medical Vehicle (VMER) from Portimão and a Portuguese Red Cross ambulance were called to the incident. The man was taken to the hospital, to receive ongoing medical care.
“I want to say that we are all important in this 'rescue/survival' chain, nobody saves alone, we are all a great team, when we all work well and do what we are responsible for, everything ends well”, Filipe said.
