US outstrips the French in wine consumption

wineThe Americans are now outdrinking the French when it comes to wine.

America’s taste for wine has steadily increased over the last decade while at the same time the French have reduced the amount they drink.

This year for the first time, the US took over from France to become the world’s biggest wine consumer.

Last year 29.1 million hectolitres of wine were drunk in the US, up 0.5% from 2012, while French consumption fell 7% to 28.1 million hectolitres.

The US was able to grab the title because of its far larger population. France still leads in terms of consumption per person.

On average, the French drink 1.2 bottles every week which is six times more than an average American. Over the ten years to 2011, French consumption fell more than 20% while American consumption rose by 9.1%.

Last year China overtook France to become the world's largest consumer of red wine. Chinese purchases tripled between 2007 and 2013.

France remains the world's third largest wine producer behind Italy and Spain.
