A local man decided to unblocked the mouth of the Aljezur river by hand, with a shovel, after the river flow was blocked by silt.
Where the Aljezur river joins the sea at Amoreira beach, the river had been blocked for several months due to silting up of the channel. This had resulted in the beach being closed.
The man decided to take the initiative to dig out the blockage with a shovel, "since the water in the river was already becoming rotten and many of the species that grow in its estuary were dying".
Intervention of scuh occurences is normally carried out by the Chamber of Aljezur, with the Portuguese Environment Agency and the Hydrographic Region Administration, using "human and technical means, such as rotating machines and other heavy machinery". But on this occasion, had not been done.
