Olhão swimming pools reopen four months after 'legionella' was detected

OLHÃO SWIMMING POOLS REOPEN FOUR MONTHS AFTER 'LEGIONELLA' WAS DETECTEDThe municipal swimming pools in Olhão, closed since last November due to signs of 'legionella' being detected in the changing rooms, finally reopen today,March 1st.

In a statement, the municipality states that normal activity can resume after “a deep intervention” was carried out in the water network, and tests carried out demonstrated that “the problem has been completely overcome”.

The work carried out focused on replacing the sanitary hot water tank, installing electrical resistance to increase water heating and a permanent disinfection system, using a chlorine dioxide generator.

“In this way, and acting on both fronts of combating 'legionella', increasing water temperature and chemical disinfection, the municipality guarantees prophylactic action, which will prevent the problem from recurring”, the statement reads.

Monitoring of the water network will continue to be carried out regularly, through tests carried out by an independent entity.

The Olhão swimming pool complex closed at the beginning of November last year, after signs of the development of legionella bacteria in the changing rooms, following monitoring of hot sanitary water in municipal sports equipment.

At the time, the municipality highlighted that “despite the greater investment in financial and human resources and the maximum attention paid to this matter”, there was an increase in the number of suspected occurrences and development of 'legionella' cultures on equipment municipalities.
