An Algarve salt has been voted the 3rd best in the world

AN ALGARVE SALT WAS VOTED THE 3RD BEST IN THE WORLDIn the Taste Atlas ranking of the best salts in the world in 2024, a salt originating from the Algarve won third place, among a selection of salts from all over the world.

When it comes to the Taste Atlas platform salt ranking, first place in 2024 belongs to sea salt from Maldon, United Kingdom. According to the platform, “it is typically used as a finishing salt – sprinkle it over grilled meat, butter or vegetables right before serving for the best results. Its low magnesium content does not give the salt a bitter taste after consumption, as many other salts do.”

In second place was Sal de Guérande, originally from France. According to Taste Atlas, “Sal de Guérande and Flor de Sal de Guérande are types of sea salt from the salt marshes of the Guérande peninsula, in France. Its flavour is delicate and salty, reminiscent of the ocean.” Flor de Sal de Guérandeé is also a finishing salt and “is praised for being one of the best in the world – intended to be sprinkled over dishes just before they are served, for example in salads, grilled meats and fish or even in fruits such as melons and pineapples”, the platform also states.

The Algarve salt in 3rd place is a Tavira salt, described as “an artisanal sea salt, unrefined and without additives, which adds a unique flavor to the dishes in which it is used. This fleur de sel is produced using traditional methods and is harvested by hand every two weeks, from July to September, in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Only water from the Atlantic Ocean, rich in salt and minerals, and the natural energy of wind and sun are used to produce salt.”

This Algarve salt is ideal for “preserving foods such as meat, fish and vegetables, or for making bread, butter and cheese”, concludes the Taste Atlas platform.
