New Tavira bridge has new signage unknown to many

NEW TAVIRA HAS NEW SIGNAGE UNKNOWN TO MANYThe newest bridge over the Gilão river, at Tavira, has a new traffic sign that is causing confusion with drivers and pedestrians alike.

H46 signFor several months, the historic center of Tavira has been under construction, including the public garden which was redeveloped, and the old military bridge was also subject to work. The bridge has a new traffic sign, but the meaning is causing doubt for many drivers, who have not seen this H46 sign before.

The H46 sign came into force in Portugal in 2020, but it is four years later that its been installed for the first time, in the city of Tavira.

The rectangular blue sign, showing two people playing ball, a car and a group of houses is designed to indicate entry into a residential or coexistence area, a shared area, for use by pedestrians and vehicles.

It allows all users to use the entire width of the public road, and to be allowed to play games on the public road. Drivers must not compromise the safety or convenience of other road users and must stop if necessary. The speed limit in coexistence zones is set at 20 km/h for all vehicles.

Whenever you find a sign indicating the entrance to a coexistence area, you will come across the sign H47 a few metres later, which indicates the end of the residential or coexistence area.
