Only 5 deaths suffered during the 2024 bathing season so farSince the beginning of the 2024 bathing season, which runs from May 1st to October 31st, there have been only five deaths on Portuguese beaches. Still five too many, but a big improvement on last year.

Three of those five deaths were in the Algarve and on supervised sea beaches, two due to sudden illness, in June, in Meia Praia -Lagos, and in September, in Manta Rota - Vila Real de Santo António, and one due to unknown causes in July, in Maria Luísa - Albufeira. The other two deaths were recorded on unsupervised sea beaches, one in August, in the bay of São Martinho do Porto south - Alcobaça, and in May in Algar de Benagil - Lagoa, both due to sudden illness.

According to the most recent report for the 2024 bathing season so far, between May 1st and September 30th, the AMN recorded 826 rescues, 3,554 first aid actions and five fatalities on Portuguese beaches.

In 2023, during the bathing season months, there were 14 deaths, seven of which were due to sudden illness and the rest due to drowning.
