Starting today, Monday October 7th, until Sunday October 13th, the GNR will carry out a road inspection operation throughout Portugal, aimed at preventing the use of headphones and telephone devices while driving, in order to promote road safety.
Police aim to alert drivers about the negative and even fatal consequences of improper use of mobile phones while driving.
According to a study by the Portuguese Road Prevention, almost 75% of Portuguese people admit that they use their cell phone while driving.
Use of a mobile phone or tablet while driving causes:
• Decrease in the driver's vigilance capacity and distraction of attention;
• Increased reaction time;
• Poor assessment of the vehicle's positioning on the road;
• Difficulty decoding signals and memorizing them;
• Disregard for the right-of-way rule;
• Failure to maintain a safe distance;
• Failure to signal the direction change maneuver;
• Poor speed assessment.
Road safety and reducing the number of victims on the road are a strategic priority for the Republican National Guard, which is why inspection actions will be carried out daily throughout the country.
