The Beja and Algarve regions of Portugal are under a yellow weather warning, in force between 06:00 and 15:00 today, with intense rain expected.
The IPMA predicts heavy rainfall, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms, over the next 2 days, especially in Alentejo Litoral, Baixo Alentejo and Algarve.
Safe Communities Portugal have published the following safety information.
Remember that the occurrence of precipitation may cause:
- Possibility of rapid flooding due to accumulation of rainwater or insufficient drainage systems;
- Possibility of flooding due to overflow of water lines in the historically most vulnerable areas;
- Flooding of underground urban structures with drainage deficiencies;
- Drainage difficulties in urban systems, causing floods in historically vulnerable places;
- Geomorphological phenomena caused by instability of slopes associated with soil saturation, due to loss of consistency;
- Slippery road fsurface oor and puddles;
- Damage to mounted or suspended structures;
- Movement of outdoor furniture and rubbish containers;
- Possibility of falling branches or trees, as well as affecting infrastructure associated with communication and energy networks.
The National Authority of Safety & Civil Protection (ANEPC) recommends the adoption of the following preventive measures:
- Cleaning and unobstructing drains, gutters and drainage systems;
- Identification of flood-prone areas and identification of potential hazards in case of heavy rainfall;
- Fixing loose structures in case of strong wind, avoiding risks of material falling;
- Adapt your driving. Slow down you speed. Be extra careful with the possible formation of water sheets on the roads.
