Turistrela, the concessionaire of the Serra da Estrela ski resort, is developing a project that promises to take skiing to other regions of Portugal.
The idea involves installing artificial ski slopes fed by cannons capable of producing snow, even in temperatures above zero degrees.
Turistrela president Artur Costa Pais told SIC Notícias that the project aims to promote the sport outside the traditional Serra da Estrela setting, creating new opportunities for snow tourism across the country.
The idea, currently in the planning phase, involves installing artificial ski slopes in large urban centers and tourist regions. To achieve this, Turistrela relies on cutting-edge technology, such as snow cannons capable of producing snow even in temperatures above zero degrees. According to the company, the project could be implemented quickly, but it depends on bureaucracy and the willingness of municipalities interested in hosting these infrastructures.
During the festive season, Serra da Estrela attracted thousands of visitors looking for real snow, but Turistrela believes there is room to expand the experience beyond this. This project of additional slopes would reinforce Serra da Estrela as the main snow destination in Portugal, while also expanding access to this sport to other regions of the country.
The success of this initiative will depend on the collaboration between Turistrela and local authorities, as well as the interest of investors in supporting a project that combines innovation and tourism. If it comes to fruition, skiing could soon be a reality not only in the mountains, but also in Portuguese cities and beaches.
