Algarve healthcare shortages raised in parliament

barlaventohospitalThe Parliamentary Group of the Communist Party (PCP) again have pushed the Government on the lack of human resources in the Algarve, claiming the Ministry of Health has totally ignored the lack of medical and technical assistants, a situation highlighted in earlier complaints and questions to parliament.

According to information gathered by the committee in a January meeting with the executive director and clinical director of the Health Centre Group for the Algarve’s east and west areas, the health centres in Lagoa, Lagos, Monchique, Silves, Vila do Bispo, Faro and Tavira should have 112 and 113 operational assistants.

The January tally for the area was 72 and 87 professionals respectively, a shortfall of 40 operating assistants and 26 technical assistants.

In the eastern area in health centers in Alcoutim, Castro Marim, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António there should be 59 operating assistants and 57 technical assistants. There are 36 and 46 respectively.

The Parliamentary Group of the PCP again submitted questions to the Ministry of Health on the reasons why the Government has not authorised the opening of tenders for the hiring of the missing professionals.

The Communists still want to know if the lack of recruitment of operational and technical assistants is part of a plan for primary care in the Algarve where staff will be provided by outside companies.
