'Home hospitalisation' unit at Barlavento hospital treats it's 1000th patientThe home hospitalisation unit based at the Hospital do Barlavento in Portimão, which is part of the Algarve Local Health Unit (ULS), admitted its thousandth patient last week.

“It has been a rewarding journey, especially with the results and satisfaction achieved with our patients”, says Nuno Bernardino Vieira, coordinator of the UHD in Portimão/Lagos.

Home hospitalisation is a service that is an alternative to conventional hospitalisation and that provides continuous and coordinated clinical assistance to patients, in the comfort of their own home.

In a statement, the board of directors of ULS Algarve say it is preparing an "ambitious plan to increase the hospitalisation capacity" for home hospitalisation in the Algarve, with the support of consultants specialised in the area.

The service has been available since 2019, at Faro Hospital, which has already performed more than 1,320 home hospitalisations, and since 2021 at Barlavento Hospital. The multidisciplinary teams at these units are made up of doctors, nurses, technical assistants, physiotherapists, pharmacists, dieticians and social workers.

The selection of patients for referral to home hospitalisation "require compliance with a series of clinical, social and geographic criteria".
