The Judicial Police currently has 30 inspectors working on the investigations requested by the German police, as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Praia da Luz, 18 years ago.
Work began early this morning and is expected to continue until Friday.
Searches are taking place in a vast area between the city of Lagos and Praia da Luz, where the main suspect, Christian Brückner, lived at the time of his disappearance.
A statement released by the PJ today says the searches are taking place following a European Investigation Order “issued by the German authorities and authorised by the Public Prosecutor's Office coordinator for the Faro District”. All information and evidence collected will remain in the possession of the German police, who are in charge of the investigation, for analysis.
The Braunschweig Public Prosecutor's Office is leading the ongoing process and has requested the execution of search warrants in the municipality of Lagos, as part of “a preliminary process against a German citizen suspected of committing the murder of British citizen Madeleine Beth McCann”, the statement added.
Madeleine McCann, then three years old, disappeared on May 3rd 2007, from the apartment in Praia da Luz where she slept with her two year old twin siblings, while her parents were having dinner with friends a few metres away, in the coastal resort.
German police named Christian Brückner as the prime suspect in the child's kidnapping and murder back in 2020, but no charges have ever been filed.
