Search efforts are intensifying in Albufeira as family, friends, and locals continue to look for 38 year old Greg Monks from Glasgow, who has now been missing for a week.
Greg was last seen in the early hours of Wednesday, May 28th, after arriving in Portugal the previous day with a group of friends for a stag do. He had been out celebrating the start of the trip and was captured on CCTV at approximately 3:27 am, walking along Rua da Gralheira, near a house called Villa Aguia Mar.
His family fears he may have become disoriented and potentially suffered an accident while trying to return to his accommodation.
Since his disappearance, the community has rallied to assist in the search, with volunteers scouring the area on foot and even using drones in the effort to locate him. Local hospitals have been contacted in case he was admitted under unknown circumstances.
Initially, the investigation was handled by the GNR (National Republican Guard), but it has now been passed to the Polícia Judiciária (PJ), Portugal’s criminal investigation police.
Greg’s sister, Jillian, shared an update on Tuesday through the Facebook group Missing Person Greg Monks – Albufeira, Portugal, which was created to share updates and coordinate search efforts.
“The GNR informed us that the case is now being handled by PJ,” she wrote. “The British Embassy has said they will arrange a meeting with the PJ as soon as possible, though we don’t yet know when that will happen.”
In the meantime, Greg’s family continues to search the area where he was last seen. They are asking anyone who has been involved in the search to share map screenshots of the locations covered, to avoid duplicating efforts. These can be sent via the Facebook page or directly to Jillian or Carlyn Monks.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the support and guidance we’ve received,” Jillian added. “We’re doing our best to stay organised and focused, despite having limited information from the authorities.”
Greg is described as being 6 ft 1 in tall (approximately 1.85m), with dark hair and blue eyes. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing dark blue Nike shorts and a T-shirt.
