The sole crew member of a sailboat that was adrift 92 nautical miles out to sea, had to be rescued by a Portuguese Air Force helicopter this morning.
The rescue took place about 170 kms southwest of Cape St. Vincent, in Vila do Bispo.
The Navy, which coordinated the search and rescue operation, states that, after receiving an alert about a sailboat in an emergency situation, an investigation was carried out which determined that the boat “was adrift with a broken mast and water entering the boat”.
As he was in a “dangerous situation due to the adverse weather conditions”, the crew member of the sailboat, a Spaniard, was “rescued and transported by the EH-101 Merlin helicopter, of the Portuguese Air Force, to the Montijo Air Base (BA nº 6), without the need for medical assistance”.
