The Algarve recorded 841 male victims of domestic violence between 2021 and 2024, the highest in the country according to the Portuguese Victim Support Association (APAV).
Domestic violence against adult men increased by 48.2% between 2021 and 2024, 25% of whom were over 65 years old, and subjected to prolonged and invisible abuse.
According to APAV, which supported 3671 victims during the 3 year period, more than 54% of victims suffered continued violence and 29.9% waited between two and six years before seeking help for the first time.
The profile drawn up by the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV) points to “a particularly vulnerable scenario”: 25.4% of victims are 65 or older, 84.9% are of Portuguese nationality and 22.9% (841) reside in Faro, the most representative district among registered cases.
Lisbon registered 692 cases (19.1%), Porto 502 (13.7%), Braga, 405, (11%) and Setúbal 276 (7.5%), according to the APAV Statistics, based on data regarding support processes developed in person, by telephone, email and online, in the period between 2021 and 2024.
The Victim Assistance Center, telephone 116 006, operates from Monday to Friday, between 8 am and 11 pm.
