Searches are underway for a fisherman, who was spearfishing with two friends at Ponta da Atalaia in Aljezur yesterday afternoon, but disappeared.
“Following an alert from the man's friends at 4:09 pm, searches were immediately initiated at the site by the crew of the Sagres Lifeguard Station, by members of the local command of the Lagos Maritime Police and by a drone team from the Aljezur Volunteer Firefighters”, said the National Maritime Authority (AMN), in a statement.
Based on information given the man's friends, he was spearfishing underwater, but “ was not seen returning to the surface, and did not return back to land at the agreed time”.
Searches resumed this morning after being interrupted overnight, and are being coordinated by the port captain and local commander of the Lagos Maritime Police, with members of the Water Rescue Intervention Unit (UNISA) of the Algarve Fire Department, also engaged in underwater searches.
The Maritime Police Psychology Office has been activated and is providing support to the victim's friends and family.
