Yetserday, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced that the construction of the Algarve Central Hospital will begin "at the latest in early October", with an investment of 800 million euros.
At the traditional Festa do Pontal, on the Quarteira promenade, which marks the PSD's political 'rentrée', Luís Montenegro stated that the project, which will operate under a public-private partnership, will begin early October, with construction starting in early 2027 and then begin operating in 2030.
“By the beginning of October at the latest, we will launch the international competition for the construction of the Algarve Central Hospital under a public-private partnership,” Montenegro stated.
For the Social Democratic leader, this procedure will allow "with all subsequent steps, that the start of the work can correspond, more or less, to the beginning of the year 2027 and that the hospital can begin operating in 2030".
“We are talking about an investment of 800 million euros,” he said.
Luís Montenegro also announced that water efficiency in the Algarve remains a concern for the Government and guaranteed that financing for the construction of the Alportel and Foupana dams has "already been secured."
For the Prime Minister, this is the largest investment ever in the Algarve region, "part of a strategy" that the Government has for the entire country, to manage water, a resource that in Portugal "exists in sufficient quantity."
“We don’t have a lack of water, but rather a lack of capacity to manage and store the water we have,” he pointed out. According to Montenegro, the government is committed to ensuring that by 2050 the "largest investment ever will be made to ensure that no one will lack water, whether for domestic supply or for all economic activities, particularly agriculture."
Luís Montenegro also said that the Algarve, a region that has been neglected by previous governments, will also receive investments to stimulate economic activity in the region.
According to the PM, the Government has already secured the holding of the MotoGP motorcycle Grand Prix for 2025 and 2026 and that "everything is ready to formalise the return of Formula 1 to the Algarve, in 2027".
"These events require some financial effort on the part of the Government, but they provide direct and indirect promotional returns that are truly worthwhile," he concluded.
