The Judicial Police (PJ), with the collaboration of the GNR and ICNF, have now arrested a 35 year old man, for the alleged lighting of four forest fires earlier this month.
The crimes, which occurred on the 18th and 26th of August, took place in Casais (Monchique), Vale da Ribeira, Arão and Canafachal.
The suspect set the fires in areas of low scrubland (herbaceous and brambles), between 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm, "the time of day when temperatures are higher and relative humidity is lower, which luckily did not have more serious consequences due to the public reporting these fires, and the rapid and effective intervention of the Fire Department.
The arsonist used a family member's motorcycle to travel to the various locations, start the fires and quickly leave the area.
The investigation, led by the Portimão Criminal Investigation Department of the PJ, was initiated after the crimes became known, allowing the collection of important evidence, which culminated in the arrest of the suspect.
The detainee, who has no criminal record for crimes of the same nature, will be presented for the first judicial interrogation for the application of coercive measures.
