The Public Security Police are reminding people not to share their routine or whereabouts on social media, informing potential thieves that their home is empty.
The PSP recorded 2521 home burglaries in the first half of this year, and also made 66 arrests. Although the number of theft crimes inside residences has reduced by 3.9% this year, the number of arrests was the same as in the first half of last year.
Among the methods most used by thieves to force entry into homes are “breaking doors, locks and windows, using lock picks, tools or acid” and “climbing floors, balconies and windows”.
Theft without breaking and entering include common methods such as climbing or using false keys.
Advice to deter thieves includes keeping clothes out to dry, or using lights to make it appear as if someone is home, and the PSP recommend reporting any suspicious situation or crime to the authorities. The quicker this reporting is done, the faster steps will be taken to identify the perpetrator(s) of the crime(s).
Lock doors, keep lights on, and don't share your routines and whereabouts on social media, to prevent domestic thefts.
