A man was rescued on Sunday afternoon, 12 October, after the small fishing vessel he was aboard sank against the west breakwater of Lagos harbour.
According to the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the alert came in at around 6:05 p.m. via the emergency number 112, reporting that a boat had collided with the breakwater.
Responders from the SeaWatch project, Lagos Maritime Police, Lagos Volunteer Firefighters, and the municipal coastal rescue programme (PPAL) were immediately dispatched to the scene.
When they arrived, the victim, who had suffered only minor injuries, had already been pulled from the water by members of the public, and received prompt assistance from SeaWatch personnel and firefighters, the AMN said.
The SeaWatch initiative provides motorised coastal patrols in coastal areas without lifeguard coverage, originating over a decade ago to help prevent drowning incidents throughout the Algarve.
The vessel’s captain has been instructed to submit a removal plan for the shipwrecked vessel, with recovery operations expected to take place today. The Lagos Maritime Police are investigating the incident.
