A 22-year-old man fell yesterday, Sunday 9 November, from a cliff at Praia da Marinha, in the Benagil caves area of Lagoa, and was rescued “showing signs of hypothermia, fractures and multiple abrasions,” according to the National Maritime Authority (AMN).
The victim, a German national, fell from the cliff shortly before 1:45 p.m. The alert was received by the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre, which immediately dispatched lifeboat crews from Portimão and officers from the Portimão Maritime Police Command.
Firefighters from the Lagoa Volunteer Fire Brigade and a medical emergency team (VMER) from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) were also called to the scene.
“When rescuers arrived, they found that the victim had managed to swim to shore and taken shelter in a nearby cave. He was in shock, showing signs of hypothermia, fractures and multiple abrasions,” the AMN said.
The Portimão lifeboat crew rescued the man and took him to the Ferragudo lifeboat station, where he was treated by firefighters and INEM medics before being transferred to hospital.
