The Algarve Food Bank announced this Monday, 1 December, that 138.17 tonnes of foodstuffs were collected from 132 retail outlets and two warehouses during its weekend campaign on 29 and 30 November.
According to the organisation, the goods gathered through this solidarity initiative will begin to be distributed to 136 social welfare institutions from this week onwards, as part of a project aimed at filling larders in the lead up to Christmas.
“Some 15,811 people with verified food shortages will receive food parcels or prepared meals,” the Food Bank revealed.
In a statement, the president of the Algarve Food Bank thanked hundreds of volunteers who joined the effort and “helped make the initiative a success”.
“The current challenges, which are pushing more and more families into poverty, demand greater unity, and it is important to remember that everyone can support the organisation throughout the year,” emphasised Nuno Cabrita Alves.
For those who have not yet contributed to the Algarve Food Bank campaign through direct food donations, it is still possible to do so via the “Ajuda Vale” scheme until 7 December.
Vouchers will be available at supermarket checkouts, each with a barcode corresponding to the specific products donors wish to give.
