On Saturday night, dozens of shots were fired at the façade of a house in Silves, in the Algarve. The gunmen have not yet been identified, and investigators suspect that a military-grade weapon may have been used.
The attackers arrived shortly before midnight, their faces covered, and opened fire on the front of the property, discharging dozens of rounds.
The gunfire was captured by a surveillance camera at a neighbouring house. Residents say the attackers were carrying at least one firearm.
At the time of the shooting, the occupants of the house were inside, including two minors. Neighbours also reported seeing two men fleeing the scene.
Speaking to journalists, local residents said they were shocked by what had happened.
Based on the sound recorded by the security camera and the dozens of bullet impacts visible on the wall, authorities believe a machine gun was used in the attack. While licensed ownership of hunting and sporting firearms is permitted under strict conditions, automatic weapons remain entirely outside the civilian sphere. Any appearance of such weapons in criminal investigations is, by definition, illegal and treated as a major breach of public security.
The gunmen, who escaped on foot, remain at large. The case is now under investigation by the Judicial Police.
