A 72-year-old foreign national has been arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ) on suspicion of attempting to kill another elderly foreign resident with a knife at a caravan park in Albufeira, where both men were temporarily living.
In a statement, police officers revealed that “through its Southern Directorate, and with the cooperation of the Albufeira unit of the GNR, we detained a foreign citizen suspected of committing the crime of attempted homicide, which took place on 6 January in the Albufeira area”.
According to authorities, the 71-year-old victim and the alleged attacker became involved in a physical confrontation inside the caravan park where they were staying temporarily. The incident reportedly stemmed from long-standing disputes between the two men, and followed a court hearing held earlier that morning at Albufeira Court, in which both were involved.
During the altercation, the suspect, armed with a knife, allegedly struck the victim twice, inflicting stab wounds to the chest and abdominal areas. The injured man was taken to Faro Hospital, where he received medical treatment, the statement added.
The detainee is due to be brought before a judicial authority for a first court hearing, at which coercive measures will be determined. The investigation is being led by the Albufeira Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP).
