António José Seguro, the winner in the first round of the presidential election, said on Sunday 18th January that “democracy has prevailed” and that it “will prevail again on 8 February”, appealing to democrats, progressives, and humanists to rally behind his candidacy in order to “defeat extremism”.
Seguro entered the hall of the Cultural and Congress Centre, in his hometown of Caldas da Rainha, amidst a celebratory atmosphere, walking through the packed auditorium corridors to chants of his name before taking to the stage alongside his family.
“I am free, I live without constraints, and that is how I will act as President of the Republic. With our victory, democracy has prevailed and it will prevail again on 8 February,” the Socialist Party (PS) candidate Seguro said in his victory speech following the first round of the presidential election.
The PS-backed candidate called on “all democrats, progressives and humanists” to join his campaign so that, united in the second round, they can defeat “extremism and those who sow hatred”.
