Gay and Grey

Vive la difference! An expat in France is developing a retirement village for gay Brits who are over 50.

The village is to be the first of its kind in Europe and is situated near Narbonne in southern France.

But the search for gay and lesbian people from the UK has not been rewarded so far.

British-born Danny Silver, the company's managing director, admitted that he came up with the idea on the spur-of-the moment, after discovering that similar developments had proved popular in the US and Australia.

Inquiries have been coming in from potential French and American buyers.  After sales were launched in September, 11 properties were quickly sold to French customers and another 11 to American ones.

The Canal du Midi development was named after the well-known canal which is not far from the €25 million development.

House prices begin at €236,000.  By completion in 2015, there will be 107 eco-friendly houses with amenities, such as consierge, tennis, swimming pool and gym.

“The British have been slow as anything and I have no idea why,” Mr Silver admitted. “If they won’t come to us, we will come to them.”
