Extreme winds in Budens, Vila do Bispo, have caused damage to agricultural warehouses and left a sheep injured, prompting intervention from civil protection authorities.
A localised episode of severe wind caused material damage to two agricultural warehouses in Sítio da Boeira, in the parish of Budens, municipality of Vila do Bispo, on Thursday morning, 20th March. No human casualties have been reported.
The alert was received by the Algarve Regional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection at 07:54.
According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the phenomenon is believed to have occurred between 06:10 and 06:29, displaying characteristics consistent with convective wind activity.
The incident resulted in damage to both warehouses and the farming equipment within. A dislodged metal sheet also struck a sheep, which sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment from the municipal veterinary surgeon.
The municipal civil protection mechanism was activated, deploying the municipal civil protection coordinator, the Municipal Civil Protection Service, and the Vila do Bispo Fire Brigade, who are carrying out a technical assessment and providing the necessary support.
Paula Freitas, Mayor of Vila do Bispo, in her capacity as municipal civil protection authority, and Ana Custódio, President of the Budens Parish Council, attended the scene to monitor developments.
Authorities say the situation is now stable, with damage assessment and consolidation under way, alongside efforts to restore normal conditions.
The Algarve Regional Command continues to monitor the situation in coordination with the relevant bodies, while awaiting technical confirmation from IPMA regarding the exact nature of the phenomenon.
