Quarteira is set to serve a giant Easter folar this Saturday, 4th April, from 3.30pm, with the traditional cake stretching to an impressive 135 metres in length.
For our readers’ reference, a Portuguese folar is a traditional festive baked comestible, similar to a bread or a cake, associated primarily with Easter, though its form varies widely across Portugal depending on regional customs.
Weighing around 510 kilograms, the cake will be prepared by the local Duodoce, Costa Doce, and Valenciana pastry shops.
The cake will be distributed free of charge to the public.
The baking process takes approximately 42 hours, from kneading the dough and allowing it to rest, through baking, assembling the sections on tables and completing the final decoration.
The ingredients include 450 kilograms of flour, 45 kilograms of eggs, 180 kilograms of sugar, 14 kilograms of yeast, and 24 kilograms of orange juice and zest, alongside milk and tea infused with cinnamon, fennel, star anise, lemon zest and honey. The decoration will feature white and dark chocolate, traditional fios de ovos, and icing sugar.
