Strong gusts tore away part of the roof of the São Brás de Alportel Fire Station at around 6.00am on Sunday morning, according to the Mayor of the East Algarve town.
Mayor Marlene Guerreiro revealed that debris from the roof “was projected” onto vehicles parked in the vicinity of the station, “causing significant damage, which we deeply regret”.
The extent of the losses and structural damage is now being assessed by the board of the Humanitarian Association so that repair work can begin as swiftly as possible.
Guerreiro added that “while we assess the damage, our heroes have already had to leave to fight a fire advancing under the force of this relentless wind”.
The incident coincided with a rural fire in the parish of Cachopo, in the municipality of Tavira. The alert was raised at 4.06pm on Sunday, but the blaze now appears to be under control, with 11 firefighters and four vehicles remaining at the scene.
Elsewhere in the Algarve, on what had been a particularly windy Sunday, another wildfire remainsed active in Serominheiro, Aljezur.
Another weather-related incident involved the fall of a tree in the parish of Azinhal, Castro Marim, with the alert issued at 5.02pm. Seven firefighters and two vehicles were deployed to the scene.
