Algarve-born athlete Etson Barros is in an induced coma and under close medical observation at Faro Hospital following a road traffic accident in the early hours of Thursday, 16th April.
The information was confirmed by Sport Lisboa e Benfica, the club the athlete represents in the track and field sport.
In a statement, the club said that Barros, the national champion and record holder in the 3,000-metre steeplechase, “remains under medical supervision and is receiving all necessary care”. Club officials, alongside his family and coach, are “closely monitoring his condition”, according to the statement.
Barros is part of SL Benfica’s Olympic project and began his athletic development at Clube Oriental de Pechão, in Olhão.
