The suspension of waste disposal charges at the dump near Fatacil in Lagoa is to start on June 2nd and will last until the end of the year in a last ditch attempt to stop the proliferation of the illegal dumping of waste.
The council says this is "a first but important step in reducing the visual, environmental and public health impact in the council area."
The authority added that the announcement of a 'dump for free' period will be accompanied by stricter enforcement for persistent offenders as the dumping of waste affects everyone, shows the area in a bad light for tourists and promotes infestation by vermin.
In an interview with Sul Informaçao the council added that "Because tourism is the main means of survival for our population, attention to the quality of life and the environment led the municipality of Lagoa to take a position to encourage greater care in the disposal of waste."
Contracted waste collection and disposal company Algar has pledged to boost its service in order to provide a more effective response to the increased production of recyclable waste during the tourism season and to improve the cleanliness of recycling containers.
With these measures, the municipality of Lagoa wants to “provide a better service in line with the requirements of a municipality devoted to tourism."
