Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, 74, has undergone emergency bowel surgery to treat an ‘intestinal perforation’ in the Algarve and remains in intensive care, where her condition is described as delicate and under continuous medical supervision.
The much-loved singer and longtime resident of Albufeira is currently being treated at the public hospital in Faro, where she was admitted following the urgent procedure. However, she was placed in an induced coma after a sudden deterioration in her condition throughout Thursday, 7th May, and her prognosis is considered guarded. Her husband is said to be by her side.
Two days ago, Tyler had been reported as stable and under close observation following surgery, which doctors initially described as having proceeded without complications. However, a recent clinical setback has required constant reassessment by the medical team.
Sources close to the couple, who reside part-time in the Algarve and have done so for decades, say the singer had sought medical attention on several occasions in recent weeks. She was first examined in the United Kingdom, where a series of tests failed to identify a clear diagnosis. After returning to Portugal, she attended a private hospital in the Algarve before being referred to Faro Hospital, where her condition ultimately required emergency surgery.
The same sources indicate that Tyler had been experiencing persistent pain for several weeks, which ultimately went unidentified by doctors until this week, but she continued to fulfil professional commitments. Following her most recent concert, she travelled to the United Kingdom for further medical evaluation before her condition worsened, prompting urgent surgical intervention once she returned to the Algarve.
An intestinal perforation led to the emergency operation, a detail later confirmed by the singer’s team via social media.
“The surgery went well and she is recovering,” reads a statement shared on Tyler’s official Instagram account, which also acknowledges the concern felt by family, friends, and fans as they await further updates on her condition.
