Inatel and Pescadores beaches in Albufeira have been closed to swimmers “due to yet another rupture” detected on Monday, 11th May, in the sewage pipeline serving the Wastewater Pumping Station, which “led to a discharge of wastewater into the sea”.
In a public statement, Albufeira Municipal Council said the bathing ban was imposed today by the Portuguese Agency of the Environment (APA) following information provided by the Regional Health Administration regarding the incident.
“The entity responsible for the management and operation of the multimunicipal sanitation system is Águas do Algarve, S. A., which has already carried out repair works on the pipeline and reported the stabilisation of the flow at 10:50pm, from which point the temporary discharge into the surrounding environment ceased,” the statement adds.
According to the local authority, “a number of additional mitigation and disinfection measures were also implemented in relation to the effluent discharged into the sea, and the situation continues to be monitored by all competent authorities”.
In the same statement, Albufeira Municipal Council called for the “necessary public works to ensure the maintenance and rehabilitation of Algarve’s sanitation infrastructure, bringing a definitive end to these incidents, which are becoming increasingly frequent.”
