Bonnie Tyler’s team have issued a health update on the singer, as her family expressed disappointment over what they described as “untrue rumours” circulating about her condition.
The Total Eclipse of the Heart star is said to be “seriously ill but stable”, with doctors at Faro Hospital remaining optimistic about her recovery. The 74-year-old has been placed in an induced coma in intensive care after her health deteriorated following surgery.
Shortly after news of her condition emerged, alleged friend Liberto Mealha appeared in many Portuguese newspapers, as well as on the UK’s Good Morning Britain to discuss the singer, whom he described as a long-time friend. However, Tyler’s representatives have since clarified that he does not speak on behalf of the family.
In a statement shared on Threads, her team said: “As of this morning, Bonnie remains seriously ill but stable in hospital in Faro. However, her doctors remain positive that she will make a full recovery.
“Bonnie’s family are very disappointed by the many lurid and untrue rumours now circulating in the media and wish to make it clear that Liberto Mealha does not represent them in any way whatsoever and is not in contact with them regarding Bonnie.
“When there is any further news regarding Bonnie’s condition, we will issue another statement. In the meantime, we ask the media to cease speculation and refrain from publishing wild rumours, which only serve to distress her family, friends, and many fans. We again request privacy and decency at this difficult time.”
Appearing on Good Morning Britain on 12th May, Liberto said he had been friends with Tyler for four decades and was “praying for better news” about her health.
He added: “The doctors are positive about the situation, but at the moment it is not that good. She began feeling unwell during a concert in London and went for medical tests, but nothing was detected. She later travelled to the Algarve, where she experienced severe abdominal pain.
“Two days later she attended a private hospital, which urgently transferred her to the hospital in Faro after her appendix burst and she required emergency surgery.”
News of Tyler’s illness was first confirmed earlier this month in an official statement from her team, which read:
“We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery.
“The operation was successful and she is now recuperating. We know that her family, friends and fans will be concerned and will be wishing her a full and swift recovery.”
The Welsh singer has divided her time between Albufeira, where she owns a property, and South Wales for several years. She chose to spend increasing periods in the Algarve after falling in love with the region whilst recording an album there.
