Politicians from the Algarve branch of the governing PSD (Social Democratic Party) have revealed that the Minister for Internal Administration, Luís Neves, has pledged to introduce measures aimed at reducing waiting times at border control gates in Faro Airport.
According to a statement sent today to the newsrooms, the assurance was given to Cristóvão Norte, MP for the Algarve, following the fortnightly parliamentary debate in the Assembly of the Republic, and the minister’s recent visit to the region.
PSD Algarve said it welcomed the minister’s position and stressed that it was “essential” for the commitment to “be translated swiftly into concrete measures” capable of improving operational performance at the airport.
In its press release, the party argued that the response should include “reinforced resources, improved operational coordination, the completion of essential infrastructure works, and continuous political oversight”.
PSD Algarve maintains that the issue has worsened in recent years, “particularly following the dissolution of SEF and the implementation of new European border control rules”.
The party said the scale of the problem at Faro Airport requires “particularly close attention”, describing the airport as “the Algarve’s main gateway” and “a vital asset for mobility, tourism, the regional economy, and the country’s international image”.
MP Cristóvão Norte stated that “the key point is that there is now a clear commitment from the Minister for Internal Administration to tackle this problem, reduce waiting times and improve operations at Faro Airport”. The specific details of how this might be achieved is yet to be outlined.
The MP added that PSD Algarve would support all of the Government’s measures aimed at resolving the situation, and would closely monitor the implementation of the announced solutions.
“Faro Airport is essential for both the Algarve and Portugal. The region must have an effective response, with greater resources, improved coordination, and clear political priority,” Cristóvão Norte said.
PSD Algarve believes the priority must now be implementation, “ensuring tangible improvements to arrivals and departures at Faro Airport”.
