More than 140 firefighters, supported by five aircraft, are battling a wildfire in the municipality of Odemira, in the Beja district, on Wednesday afternoon, with several homes reported to be under threat, according to fire service and civil protection officials.
A spokesperson for the Alentejo Litoral Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command told journalists that the blaze, which was first reported at 11:49am, is burning scrubland in the parish of São Luís, within the municipality of Odemira.
Odemira fire brigade commander Luís Oliveira said only that the flames were advancing close to a number of properties.
A total of 145 personnel from several fire brigades were engaged in the operation, supported by 48 vehicles and five aerial firefighting assets.
