easyJet marked the fifth anniversary of its operational base at Faro Airport with a commemorative lunch held in an Algarve orange grove, bringing together airline executives, regional authorities, and institutional partners to reflect on the carrier's impact on the region, and to outline its ambitions for future growth.
Although the Faro base was formally established in 2021, easyJet's presence in the Algarve dates back 27 years, a historical milestone the airline highlighted as evidence of a long-standing commitment to the region.
"The Algarve is not simply another point on our network; it is one of easyJet's most important destinations in Europe," said José Lopes, Country Manager of easyJet Portugal.
Lopes recalled that the decision to launch the Faro base was taken at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, describing it as both a bold investment and a vote of confidence in the destination.
"When we announced this project in 2021, many people thought it was a crazy idea to invest in the middle of a pandemic, but it proved to be the right decision," he said, highlighting the close collaboration between Faro Airport and regional stakeholders.
Reducing tourism seasonality remains one of the airline's strategic priorities, with easyJet continuing to strengthen year-round connectivity to the Algarve. This summer, the carrier is operating 18 routes from Faro, offering around 1.7 million seats, whilst maintaining aircraft based at the airport and significantly increasing capacity during the peak season. The airline also highlighted the recent launch of its Faro–Newcastle service.
From an economic perspective, easyJet said it has carried more than 26 million passengers to and from the Algarve since 1999. The airline estimates its operations generate an annual contribution of approximately €650 million to the region's GDP, with a cumulative economic impact exceeding €8.3 billion. The Faro base currently employs around 150 people directly, in addition to supporting jobs across tourism, hospitality, food service, and transport.
Regional tourism leaders also underlined the importance of easyJet's operations. André Gomes, President of Algarve Tourism, praised the airline's contribution to the destination's recovery and subsequent growth, particularly in the post-pandemic period. Referring to the region's recent record-breaking tourism performance, he stressed the need to continue strengthening key source markets.
"Air connectivity is fundamental for an international destination such as the Algarve," he said.
José Apolinário, President of CCDR Algarve, also highlighted the importance of close cooperation between public and private organisations, as well as Faro Airport's role as the region's main gateway. He pointed to positive economic indicators, including the recovery of regional GDP and improved competitiveness, whilst reaffirming tourism's central role in the Algarve's economy.
The event also featured AlgarOrange, with José Pereira emphasising the importance of promoting Algarve citrus fruit and differentiating the region's produce in international markets, reinforcing the link between the local gastronomic sector and the destination's wider promotional efforts.
easyJet also reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the Algarve, describing the Faro base as a strategic investment for the future. "We expect the coming years to be a period of continued growth and further consolidation of this partnership," Lopes concluded.
