Local guides and tourism operators have released a statement warning of the increasing degradation of the Algarve’s much-loved 7 Vales Suspensos Trail, a coastal route located between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra.
"Overcrowded footpaths, uncontrolled movement of visitors, oblivious cyclists and horse riders, chaotic parking, illegal camping, risky behaviour around the cliffs and sinkholes, individuals posing as guides without the necessary qualifications, damage to vegetation, large amounts of litter (including human waste) along the trail, and inadequate visitor facilities, particularly toilets." These are the problems plaguing the Central Algarve trail that was for once a hidden gem on the coastline of the municipality of Lagoa, according to the warning that was issued on Tuesday, 7 July, by the group of locals who regularly operate along the popular walking route in a professional capacity.
The operators say they are "deeply concerned by the growing deterioration in the conditions of one of the Algarve's most important natural and tourism assets", arguing that the trail has become a victim of its own success, as well as of inadequate management by local authorities.
"The international success of this trail has brought an unprecedented influx of visitors. However, that growth has not been matched by a management capable of meeting the area's safety and land management needs," they said in a statement sent to newsrooms.
The problems affecting the 7 Vales Suspensos Trail are described as "not merely a threat to the natural heritage", they argue, but also represent "a risk to the safety of thousands of visitors, and undermine the quality of the tourism experience offered in the Algarve, jeopardising the reputation of a destination internationally recognised for the excellence of its natural heritage".
The tourism companies say they have "played an active daily role in raising visitors' awareness of safety rules and environmental conservation".
However, they stress, "we cannot continue to replace what should be a public management strategy for this area."
They therefore argue that "it is essential for the relevant authorities to move urgently towards implementing an integrated management plan for the 7 Vales Suspensos Trail".
According to the signatories, such a plan should include measures to monitor and manage the trail's carrying capacity, strengthen surveillance and enforcement, regulate access and parking, improve signage, visitor information and support facilities, restore sections of the trail and regenerate native vegetation, as well as establish permanent public information and environmental awareness strategies.
The companies emphasise that they are not calling for restrictions on public access to the trail. Rather, they appear to advocate "responsible management that reconciles nature conservation, public safety, and the sustainability of tourism".
"Ignoring the clear signs of pressure on this landscape means accepting an increasing risk of accidents, the continued degradation of its natural values and a decline in the quality of one of the Algarve's flagship attractions," they warn.
"This is the time to act. Protection of the 7 Vales Suspensos Trail can no longer be postponed. What is needed is leadership, coordination between the relevant authorities and a strategic vision that ensures this unique heritage is preserved for residents, visitors and future generations."
The tourism operators behind the statement also reaffirm their "full willingness to work alongside the authorities, local councils, and managing bodies to develop practical solutions that will guarantee a sustainable future for this iconic trail."
