€1.6 million redevelopment of Sagres fishing port to be inaugurated as part of Fisheries Secretary's Algarve tourPortugal's Secretary of State for Fisheries and the Sea, Salvador Malheiro, will tomorrow, 16 July, inaugurate the newly refurbished quay at the Baleeira Fishing Port in Sagres, following a €1.6 million redevelopment project.

The upgrade forms part of the Mar 2030 programme, which supports investment in infrastructure aimed at strengthening Portugal's crucial fisheries sector.

The inauguration ceremony, scheduled for 11am, marks the completion of works designed to improve working conditions for fishermen and others operating in the industry from the port.

Earlier in the day, at 9.30am, the Secretary of State will visit the ongoing refurbishment of the Lagos fish market. The project, valued at around €750,000, is intended to improve food safety standards and secure ISO 22000 certification.

On 17 July, at 11.30am, the minister will travel to Quatro Águas in Tavira to inspect the site of the future fish market. Construction has recently begun on the project, which includes the installation of a floating quay and associated external works, representing an investment of approximately €558,000.

The visit programme concludes on 19 July, at 10.30am, with a stop at Culatra Island, where plans will be presented for the rehabilitation of the sheet-pile structures and floating pontoons serving the community's fishing harbour.

The Culatra project is expected to cost around €818,000, but the detailed design phase is currently still under way, with completion of the works scheduled for the end of 2027.
