Two foreign nationals, aged 27 and 35, who were allegedly part of a drug trafficking network, were arrested in Lagos on Wednesday, 5 August. One of the men was seriously injured after attempting to jump from a balcony in an effort to escape.
In a statement, the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) said Operation “Duas Caras” (“Two Faces”) stemmed from an investigation that had been ongoing for around a year, following “strong suspicions” that the two suspects were involved in the distribution and sale of drugs across the Algarve.
The operation was advertised on social media and targeted foreign nationals visiting the Algarve on holiday, “more specifically in the Albufeira area”, according to the PJ.
A total of 5kg of cannabis resin, 500g of cocaine, as well as cannabis leaves and MDMA, were seized.
Officers also seized a precision scale, two vacuum-packing machines, around €9,500 in cash, foreign currency including Irish and British pounds, various telecommunications equipment, and a car.
During the arrests, one of the men attempted to flee by jumping from a second-floor balcony, sustaining “serious physical injuries” that required hospital treatment, the PJ said.
The coercive measures to be imposed on the suspects have not yet been announced.
The PJ said the investigation is continuing as officers seek to identify and apprehend further people allegedly linked to the drug trafficking network.
