easyJet's new German route lands some distance from Berlin

easyjetA new route connecting Faro to Berlin-Schöenefeld Airport started last week, June 25th.

easyJet is running the twice-weekly service on Wednesdays and Saturdays, departing from Berlin at 3.40pm and leaving Faro at 7pm on each day.

This is the first direct German route for easyJet and the company is determined to remain the Algarve’s prime regional airline – it currently leads with 24% of the airport’s annual traffic.

Travellers can get to Berlin Tegel airport with Air Berlin and to six regional destinations with Ryanair - Bremen, Cologne, Dortmund, Dusseldorf Weeze, Frankfurt Haan, Memmigen which is referred to as ‘Munch West.’ If travellers actually want to reach Munich they should add €18 each way for a shuttle bus.

easyJet's route to Berlin-Schöenefeld is copying Ryanair's ploy of dropping customers off in airfields some distance from their city of destination. In this instance the distance is not too punishing, just 22kms but annoying none-the-less and additional costs need to be budgeted for.

Travel advice on the Schöenefeld airport website explains that 'BVG buses and a JetExpress run from the airport to different points of the city of Berlin. There are also trains that go from the airport to Hauptbahnhof station and to the Zoo. Taxis can be found outside the terminal A and a trip to the city is about €45.'
