Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was taken to Faro Hospital on Wednesday, 12 August, as a precaution after feeling unwell in Monte Gordo, where he is currently spending his holidays.
An official source from the Algarve’s health authority, ULS Algarve, confirmed to press that the former President of the Republic had been admitted to the hospital in Faro, but did not provide further details about his condition.
The news was first reported by Jornal de Notícias, which said the former head of state briefly fainted while having lunch at Restaurante Recanto, in Monte Gordo, at around 2.30pm.
The newspaper accompanied its report with a video showing Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa being taken to an INEM emergency medical vehicle. The newspaper also reported that the former president was conscious when the ambulance arrived at the hospital.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed through several sources, including one at the hospital, that the former president had been taken to hospital “as a precaution” and that he “is doing well”.
According to the same sources, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived at Faro Hospital at around 3.45pm.
