Former President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has praised healthcare professionals and paramedics from the National Institute for Medical Emergency (INEM) after being discharged from Faro Hospital, where he was treated on Wednesday, 12th August, after feeling unwell and subsequently fainting while eating at a restaurant in Monte Gordo.
According to Correio da Manhã newspaper, the former President of the Republic was treated by INEM emergency medical professionals and left the scene “on a stretcher”. Later that same day, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was discharged from hospital.
Speaking to journalists, the former president offered an explanation for what may have caused his sudden fainting episode. According to the RTP Notícias news station, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he had experienced “a very intense day at the beach, and exercising”.
“I feel very well,” he added.
In a message published on his office’s website, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa thanked all those who had been involved in his stay at the hospital, as well as “everyone who sent messages of support and wishes for a speedy recovery”.
The statement also included a communiqué from the Algarve’s regional health authority, ULS Algarve, which said the former head of state “underwent several diagnostic tests and was monitored by the clinical team”. Following a medical assessment, he was “discharged from hospital”.
ULS Algarve also thanked “all the professionals involved for their prompt response and care”, reiterating its ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, safe, and accessible healthcare to the community.
