Princess Eugenie names daughter Adelaide, a name ‘part of Portuguese and British history’, following Lisbon birth

Princess Eugenie names daughter Adelaide, a name ‘part of Portuguese and British history’, following Lisbon birthThe third child of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank was born in a Lisbon hospital in early August. The baby is the couple’s first child to be born in Portugal, where the family has divided their time between here and the UK since 2022. Yesterday, the couple revealed her name: Adelaide.

“We are so happy to share with you Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Her name is a tribute to three people we love and admire, from both the past and the present, including her great-grandmother, whom we hold in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and consider home,” the couple wrote in a post on Instagram.

The child’s first name is believed to have been inspired by Queen Adelaide (1792-1849) of England, who was married to King William IV, as well as Maria Adelaide of Portugal, a princess of the royal house of Braganza. Annina is said to be the name of a close family friend.

The couple’s daughter was born on Monday, 3 August, at 6.20pm in a Lisbon hospital, Buckingham Palace announced. Unlike her two older brothers, five-year-old August Philip Hawke and three-year-old Ernest George Ronnie, who were born in London, Eugenie’s third child was born in the Portuguese capital, where the family spends part of the year.

The family’s connection to Portugal began in 2022, when Jack Brooksbank embarked on a new professional chapter working for property entrepreneur Mike Meldman, a business partner of George Clooney. Until then, Brooksbank had worked as a brand ambassador for Casamigos tequila, founded by the American businessman Rande Gerber.

Eugenie, meanwhile, continues in her role as director of the Hauser & Wirth art gallery in London, balancing her professional commitments with a life split between the UK and Portugal.
