Two kids die in quad bike accident

inemTwo young lads, one Irish and one Portuguese, have died following a quad bike accident.

A third boy, also Irish, aged seven is 'stable but poorly' in intensive care in Coimbra hospital.

The Irish boy aged five and a six-year old Portuguese lad were fatally injured when the quad bike, driven by a 50-year old Briton, left the road and crashed on Friday night in Casal Novo in the district of Coimbra.

The boys were not wearing helmets and suffered severe head injuries when they were thrown off the vehicle.

It's believed the driver swerved to avoid an animal and the kids were thrown from the vehicle.

The Portuguese lad died at the scene and was an only child. His parents are receiving bereavement counselling.

GNR officers soon found the driver and promptly arrested him. The British man appeared in court on Saturday morning where he was provisionally charged with negligent homicide and failure to have stopped to assist the police.

The man, who is not related to the three young victims, suffered minor injuries in the smash and is said to have been resident in the area for some years.
