Mobile roaming charges drop

mobmast‘Roaming’ charges for mobile phones in the EU have been slashed in half.

The cost of using the internet when in another EU country dropped on 1 July to a maximum of €0.20 per megabyte. Previously the cost was €0.45.

The new EU limits on charging reduces the cost of making and receiving calls in the EU as well as lessening the price of accessing the internet.

Making phone calls to another EU nation now cost €0.19 per minute, a drop of 5 cents. Receiving calls cost €0.05 per minute. The price of sending a text message is €0.06.

VAT/IVA is to be charged on top of these prices.

EU leaders have been gradually reducing mobile roaming charges since 2007. The goal is to scrap them altogether within the EU by the end of 2015.

The changes apply to the 28 EU member states only, thus excluding countries such as Switzerland, Norway, and Turkey.

Should also check out that Vodafone charges 3 euros a day when abroad , looks like they have got around the EU legislation by charging a roaming service fee.
