A 34-year-old English man suffered a traumatic brain injury this Tuesday afternoon, 20 October, after falling around 10 metres (33ft) from a cliff near Praia do Amado, in the Algarve municipality of Aljezur.
According to António Ângelo, commander of the Aljezur Volunteer Fire Brigade, the victim and a second man were using old ropes fixed to the rocks. Fishermen use these to reach an area known as Monte do Engenheiro, near Praia do Amado. One of the ropes snapped. Why the man, who was a tourist, was using these ropes remains unclear.
‘The victim fell from a height of around ten metres and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He is conscious, but his speech is incoherent,’ the commander said. He added that a friend of the victim gave the emergency services the coordinates of the incident.
The man was swiftly airlifted to Faro Hospital.
According to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), the alert was raised at 3.30pm. The rescue operation involved 20 firefighters, backed by five vehicles and an aerial resource, an INEM helicopter. Lagos Maritime Police were also involved.
