London drives into cash-free realm

londonLondon buses have become part of the trend of a cash-free society.

Cash is no longer accepted on any of the capital’s 24,500 buses.

Instead, passengers will have to pay in advance on an Oyster or other contactless payment card.

Transport for London said only 0.7% of bus trips had been paid by cash, and that it expected the ban on real money to make journeys quicker as well as saving £24m a year.

Tourists, it said, were mostly using Visitor Oyster so would were not likely to be inconvenienced.

Plans are already underway to shut every ticket office across the underground train network.
